MAII FEI FAT and NAO TAI TAO ( 賣飛佛 與 鬧太套)

As time goes on, we find this course is becoming more and more challenging. Recently we are busy preparing for the final project, at the same time, learning programming with python.

Since this is a really multidiscipline course, this time, I’d love to talk about something more relaxing, the cyber-culture in social media. More specifically, some fun web slang!

Do you know this two handsome guys? Yes! They are Ng Cheuk Hei from HK and Huang Xiaoming from mainland, both are very popular actors. Two funny slang, “Mai Fei Fat” and “Not At All” were created because of them.

In a TV commercial, Ng said “Tai Lin, my favorite”. With his strong HK accent, it just sounds like “Tai Lin, Maii Fei Fat”. Then the slang was created and used for mocking Ng and just for fun. Now not only young people in HK use this word, you can also see some figures in TV series using it.

Very similarly, netizens in mainland use the slang “Nao Tai Tao” to laugh at Huang’s terrible oral English.  Because he pronounced “Not at all” like “Nao Tai Tao”.

Actually, their English are not too bad. Maybe this two words became popular just because there are many people jealous of Ng and Huang’s handsome look. LOL

Young people always like kuso, suck gags, anti-humor and another funny but stupid things. That’s why GOLDEN Forum in HK as well as Tianya and Tieba in mainland could be so hot. I found that even though netizens in HK and mainland use different social platform, but their cyber-culture really have some similarities.

The other interesting example is “MK Look” and “Sha Ma Te”. Both of these neologisms are used to describe certain dressing styles of some people, who want to be fashion, but could only afford to cheap, poor-quality and weird clothes. Those kind of clothes could be found in Mong Kok (a shopping area in HK) and Taobao (a very influential online shopping site operated by Alibaba). Behind “MK Look” and “Taobao Feel” are two subcultures originated from cyberspace, “Mong Kok Culture” and “Sha Ma Te Culture”.

Everyday, more and more new words would emerge online, some of them may even penetrate into everyone’s daily life.  Our course project targets social media, exactly where most of new words come from. When we analyze netizens’ comments, we have to figure out the meaning of the internet slangs they use. This may increase the difficulty of our natural language processing and data mining.

  3. Funny topic!
Once I saw 'MAII FEI FAT', I knew it must be related to Ng Cheuk Hei. XD
I agree that understanding internet slangs are important for doing NLP online. At the same time, I think emoticon also a important area of NLP. On the forum, people tend to use emoticon to reply others.

    1. I am happy to know you like this topic!
I agree with you that emoticon is important for sentiment analysis. For example, emoticons can help us detect sarcasm.

  4. You topic makes me confused at the beginning. But your blog is so impressive. I feel that Human being is so creative. It is difficult to do NLP. Maybe we can defined the unrecognized words as the new word. There is still a lot of artificial work to do.

    1. It is true that it would be difficult for computers to identify the new word. Maybe we could teach them how to do recognize those words. Machine learning could help computers a lot. The more the computer see a new word, the better understanding it would have.

  5. You mention the new words appearing on the Internet with quite a humorous accent which makes it really impressive. The study of new words, especially some new meaning of old words are quite popular these days and is also a challenge in sentiment analysis. What's more, well I believe that Mr Huang did set a new image after his acting in the movie HeHuoRen as a English teacher with fluent oral English.Still, the NAOTAITAO he has sang before will always remain in everyone's heart. lol

    1. When you mention Mr Huang, it just reminds me one of my professor. TAT
It is true that the new internet slang would be a difficulty for sentiment analysis. We also face this problem when we are doing our final project. Maybe machine learning is a solution for this question.
Prof. Huang will always remain in my heart.

  6. I think social networks always make these popular words more popular. For example, several months ago, the sentence 'Where to learn the best excavation technology?' almost appeared at the end of most popular tweets though it is meaningless. It first became prevailing in Tieba and more people learned about it on Weibo. However, maybe none of us will use it today because it is a little out-of-date. In social networks, such popular words appear quickly and disappear quickly as well!

    1. Netizens are always so creative. New words emergence every day. Many of them are related to news. Just like you indicates, many popular words may be forgotten by people quickly, whten people have no more interest in the news the words related to, or people are tired using them. However some words could be popular for many years. For example, "too young too simple, sometimes naive". XD
Some of the word will disappear and some will not, then the question is coming!

  7. The title of this blog really caught my eyes. I first thought you were going to talk something about cantonese pronunciation until I saw the familiar faces in the photo. Social media is clearly having a noticeable impact on language. To be more specific, social media contributes to creating and accelerating the speed of spreading such new words. The rising use of network language has also changed the way we use traditional expressions.

    1. Yes, many word from internet have been used in our daily life. It is a very interest phenomenon.
There are also many jokes and gags about some people's cantonese accent. I love those jokes, as well as internet slang created by Hong Kong netizens. Now we are studying in HK, I think the more we know about local people's gags, the better we could understand local culture.

  8. I have to be honest that the photo of Ng Cheuk Hei interested me to read this blog! I fond it interesting and gave me a good relax before the final presentation.
The new words you mentioned are important part of our sentiment dictionary. And people also give new different meaning on normal words. So edit the dictionary is a necessary step to reach a more accurate goal.

This video was recomposed from a TV interview in MK. This anti-occupy person became notorious immediately due to his crazy answer. Some people thought he had some relationship with local mafia and some believed he was a tourist from mainland.
A few weeks ago, a portrait of him was drew on the white board at the learning garden.

  10. Johnny!!!!!! You're born for social media marketing!!!!! Seriously, I invite you to post some interesing content on my forum: www.ba-china.org

All of you topics are eye-catching! I have to say that you're a DouBi, a knowledgeable DouBi, hahaha.

Back to your topic, I think some of the interesting topics (段子,梗) spreading on social media were created by the public relation or marketing team supporting the stars. Sarcasm is the human nature that people laughing at the famous, and it could arouse the sympathy of the public. So the 段子 could be disseminated so widely and quickly.
